Onyu-dani valley

Autumn leaves are a must-see for autumn trips in Japan. Onyu-dani is a large valley where you can enjoy the autumn leaves and the sea of clouds together. Both of them make us aware of the beauty and mystery of the seasons woven by nature. Why don't you visit Onyu-dani, in Kutsuki, during the autumn foliage season?

Around this area, there is a vast virgin forest of beech, and there are other trees such as Quercus crispula trees (in Japanese mizunaraconsidered a variety of Mongolian oak), and maple trees known in Japan as itayakaede, which have larger leaves than general maple leaves.

You can enjoy the autumn colors in the mountains all over Japan, but the time and scale vary. Onyu-dani valley is a hidden spot known to those in the know. Of course, neither the autumn leaves nor the sea of clouds can be seen all year round. The best season is the end of October, and the best time is from dawn to early morning.

Considering the time of sunrise in October, it is probably from 6 to 7 in the morning. If possible, arrive at the summit before 6 o'clock and wait for the sunrise at the scenic point. That way, you are more likely to meet the sea of clouds.

Therefore, we recommend staying overnight in Takashima and leaving early in the morning by car. If you do not have a rental car and an international driver's license, please contact the Biwako Takashima Tourism Association or us.

To create a sea of clouds, some climatic conditions must be met: fine weather and low temperatures during the night; temperature difference between daytime and nighttime around 10 degrees; rain the day before; and windless day.

The average maximum temperature in Takashima in October is 21 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is 13 degrees Celsius. In November, the average maximum temperature is 15 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 7 degrees Celsius. But these are the average temperatures in the plains. The view point is 820m above sea level, so it gets colder than the plains.

The sea of clouds is generated on the same principle that fog is formed, so it disappears when the sun and the temperature rise. Of course, it is a natural phenomenon, so please be aware that there are days when you can see it and days when you can not. Even so, Onyu-dani valley has good geographical conditions to see the sea of clouds, and you can enjoy the autumn leaves in late October.
