Chikubu Island

Chikubushima or Chikubu Island is known as a mysterious island, which is located in the northern part of Japan's biggest lake: Lake Biwa. Otomegaike -pond of Venus-

Otomegaik e is a beautiful pond which is 10-minutes walk from Omi-Takashima Station. Many Japanese TV dramas were filmed there. It is one of the spots worth visiting on the wa y to Shirahige Shrine . The name Otomegaike means "Virgin Pond" or "Venus Pond". About 100 years ago, freshwater pearls were cultivated in this pond, which was rechristened at that time. Water flows into Lake Biwa from about 200 rivers. A pond that looks like a temporary resting place for water just before it flows into Lake Biwa is called in Japanese " naiko ", referring to "inner lake" or "inward lagoon". There are more than 20 such inner lagoons around Lake Biwa. Otomegaike Pond is counted as one of them. The inward lagoons around the Lake Biwa mainly have three functions. Kaizu-Osaki

Kaizu-Osaki is a cape located on the north shore of Lake Biwa. The water is very clean because it is located in the northernmost part of Lake Biwa (the water of Lake Biwa flows from north to south). The nearest station is Makino Station. This place is not well known to foreign tourists, but in the spring, magnificent cherry blossoms bloom. The type of cherry blossom is called Somei-Yoshino . There are 800 cherry trees over the 4km cape, which makes a wonderful view. These cherry trees were planted along the lake by locals when the tunneling of the road was done in the 1940s. The secret to enjoying the cherry blossoms in Kaizu-Osaki is to see the cherry blossoms from the boat. The 800 cherry trees seen from the biggest lake in Japan are truly wonderful views.
